The cake for a christening is the one celebration order where the honest answer is buy less than you think. Eight to twenty servings covers most of them, that fits on a single tier, and a single tier is the cheapest format there is because nothing structural goes inside it. The complication is not the cake at all: it is that in Spain the same workshops spend May and June buried under first communions, a ritual most foreign families have never had to plan around.
How much is a christening cake in Barcelona? Around 27,50 to 36,00 euros for 8 to 20 servings, or a closed 59,95 at Balbisiana. It fits on one tier, which is where the saving is.
Two thresholds decide the price
Not the design. The number of servings, and then whether that number forces a second tier.
8 to 10 servings is the smallest most commission workshops will make, and it is the same bracket where Pepina Pastel charges 29 to 32 euros. For a christening with immediate family only, this is the whole order.
Up to 20 or 25 servings still fits on a single tier — no internal support, no second sponge, no assembly.
From 30 servings a second tier becomes necessary, and the price stops tracking the servings. HelMa Cakes puts its large format at 69,90 euros and up. Most christenings never reach this line; almost every communion does, which is why the two occasions read so differently on a quote.
Why May and June are the problem
First communion is the Catholic milestone Spanish families mark at around eight or nine years old, and it is a full banquet with an extended guest list. The celebrations concentrate on May and June weekends — exactly when wedding season peaks.
For a workshop taking a limited number of commissions a week, those dates go 6 to 12 months ahead. The technical lead time for a custom cake stays what it always is, 3 to 7 days, or two weeks with fondant or a modelled figure. But in May the diary is the binding constraint, not the oven: 30 days is the prudent margin.
A christening outside that window is a straightforward order. A christening inside it competes with every communion in Catalonia.
The restaurant question that surfaces too late
If the celebration is at a restaurant on a set menu, ask whether an outside cake is allowed and whether there is a charge for serving it. Spanish restaurants often apply a cutting fee, the same logic as corkage on wine.
It is a condition of the venue, not the bakery, which is precisely why it gets missed — and it tends to come up after the 50 % deposit on the cake has already been paid. Ask when you book the table.
Four things to settle before you ask for a quote
- The number of servings, as a number. Every quote is built on it, and “a small family lunch” is not one.
- The date of the christening, not the collection date, so the workshop can work backwards from it.
- Whether anyone at the table is coeliac, vegan or dairy-free. This picks the workshop before the design does.
- Whether the venue allows an outside cake, and at what charge.
The fourth is the one that is not about cake at all, and the one most likely to change the plan.
Collecting it, and where the workshops are
Several of these are commission workshops without a street counter — Lorena Bakery and Pepina Pastel have no shopfront at all, and deliver instead. Where there is a counter, the handover window can be narrow: HelMa Cakes releases orders only from 12.00 to 17.30 on weekdays and 12.00 to 14.00 on Saturdays.
For a christening that usually lands on a Saturday morning, that Saturday window matters more than anything else on this page. Allow 48 hours between confirming the order and collecting it, and set aside 2 hours on the day itself for the pickup and the trip to the venue if the cake is going anywhere other than straight home. Escribà, on Gran Via 546 and La Rambla 83, is the most central of the counters and the easiest to reach on foot from the old town.
Who to order from
Pepina Pastel — online, WhatsApp 673 27 68 13. 27,50 to 36,00 euros for 8 to 20 servings with 48-hour delivery, covering vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free at once. Too small for a communion, which is exactly why it fits a christening.
Balbisiana — ships across mainland Spain. Publishes a closed price of 59,95 euros, one of the few firm figures in this market. Its workshop is in Madrid, so it arrives by courier rather than over a counter.
Barcelona Cakes — workshop in the Eixample, phone 93 205 36 96, WhatsApp 648 64 07 46. Has a dedicated christening line within a seven-format catalogue and offers a version without fondant. Quotes in 24 to 48 hours.
HelMa Cakes — Descartes 32, phone 620 90 14 95. Certified 100 % gluten-free, celebration range 32,00 to 77,00 euros, 48 hours’ notice, collection weekdays 12.00 to 17.30 and Saturdays 12.00 to 14.00. The answer when a diagnosed coeliac will be at the table — the other dedicated workshops are in gluten-free cakes.
Lorena Bakery — own workshop, Instagram @lorena.bakerybcn. Five formats beyond the round cake, including tall cakes and flowers. Delivers within Barcelona, with no street counter.
Pastelosofía — Ferran Turné 16, La Sagrera. Entirely gluten-free with more than 60 items including fondant, and covers vegan and sugar-free. Needs two weeks for a worked finish.
Escribà — Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes 546 and La Rambla 83. The historic house, open since 1906, for a large order. Payment is 50 % on acceptance and 50 % before delivery.
Mericakes is worth naming only to rule it out: it requires a minimum of 60 guests, so it fits banquets rather than christenings.
Prices you can compare
| Workshop | Price | Lead time | Strong on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pepina Pastel | 27,50 to 36,00 euros, 8 to 20 servings | 48 hours | small size, three diets at once |
| Balbisiana | 59,95 euros | ask | closed price, arrives by courier |
| HelMa Cakes | 32,00 to 77,00 euros | 48 hours | certified gluten-free |
| Barcelona Cakes | quoted | 24 to 48 hours for the quote | dedicated christening line |
| Pastelosofía | quoted | 2 weeks with fondant | gluten-free, vegan, sugar-free |
| Escribà | large orders, 50 % deposit | ask | historic house since 1906 |
Three of them publish a firm figure — Pepina Pastel, Balbisiana and HelMa Cakes. The rest quote against your servings, which is another reason to arrive with a number rather than a description.
Around the order
The general lead-time tiers and what drives the price of any commissioned cake are in ordering a cake, and getting one delivered to an address, including from outside Spain, in cake delivery. If the party wants a spread of small pieces rather than one cake, that is a different product with different pricing, in dessert tables.
For a wedding the timescale is months rather than weeks, in wedding cakes. Plant-based versions are in vegan cakes, and if there are children to entertain around the celebration, kids’ birthday parties.
Frequently asked questions about christening cakes in Barcelona
What size christening cake do I actually need?
Between 8 and 20 servings for most christenings, which fits on a single tier and is the cheapest format because it carries no internal structure. Workshops only go to two tiers from about 30 servings, and 8 to 10 is the smallest they will make.
How much does a christening cake cost in Barcelona?
Around 27,50 to 36,00 euros for 8 to 20 servings at Pepina Pastel, with 8 servings at 29 to 32. Balbisiana publishes a closed price of 59,95 euros, and HelMa Cakes runs 32,00 to 77,00 depending on format.
Why are May and June so difficult to book?
Because first communions fall on those weekends and collide with wedding season, which is the annual peak for every workshop in the city. The technical lead time stays 3 to 7 days, but in May the diary is the constraint and 30 days is prudent.
Will the restaurant let me bring my own cake?
Not always, and some charge a cutting fee. It is a condition of the venue rather than the bakery, and it tends to surface after the 50 % deposit has already been paid, so ask when you book the table rather than when you order the cake.
Which workshop suits a christening with a coeliac guest?
HelMa Cakes, certified 100 % gluten-free, with celebration cakes from 32,00 to 77,00 euros and 48 hours’ notice. Pastelosofía is also entirely gluten-free and covers vegan and sugar-free within the same range.
Can I order from outside Barcelona?
Balbisiana ships across mainland Spain at a published 59,95 euros, though its workshop is in Madrid rather than here. Pepina Pastel also sells online with 48-hour delivery, which covers most of what a christening needs.
Prices, lead times and collection windows taken from each workshop’s own published information, consulted on 1 September 2026. Seasonal congestion in May and June is the pattern the workshops themselves describe.
