Travelling with coeliac disease turns every bakery window into a research problem, and the reassuring answer — sí, tenemos sin gluten — is not the one that matters. The EU threshold for a gluten-free claim is 20 milligrams per kilo, and that ceiling is cleared by flour dust in the air, by a piping bag, or by the spatula that cuts the slice. What decides it is whether wheat flour comes through the door at all.
Where do you order a gluten-free cake in Barcelona? At a dedicated bakery where no wheat enters. HelMa Cakes on Descartes 32 is certified by the Catalan coeliac association and runs 32 to 77 euros.
The certification a visitor will not recognise
The reliable signal in Catalonia is the mark of the Associació Celíacs de Catalunya, which audits the production process rather than the recipe. It is a regional body, so it looks nothing like Coeliac UK’s crossed grain or the GFCO mark, and a visitor scanning a window will not know to look for it.
Two of the seven bakeries here carry it: HelMa Cakes and Casa Lupita. The other five are dedicated premises that simply do not stock wheat, which achieves the same thing without the audit.
A mixed patisserie can have a perfectly formulated recipe and still share a mixer, a proving cabinet and a display case. For a diagnosis rather than a preference, that is not enough.
Ordering before you arrive
Casa Lupita — carrer del Coronel Sanfeliu 10, Sant Martí. Certified 100 % gluten-free, with breads, biscuits, cakes, granola and a no-sugar line, plus vegan and dairy-free selections. Individual pieces run two to three euros.
It is the only one on this list with an online shop that ships to Spain, France and Italy, which makes it the single address that solves an order placed from outside the city — for an arrival, for a rented flat, or for someone else living here.
The same-day answer
Jansana Gluten Free — Balmes 106, Eixample. One of the longest-established gluten-free bakeries in the city and, more usefully, the one with the widest opening: 8.30am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 2pm on Sunday. Macarons, croissants, doughnuts and seasonal items at two to three euros a piece, with a dairy-free option on request.
Every other entry here needs notice. This one does not, which is why it is the practical answer for a four-day trip. It sits in the Eixample, walkable from most of the centre.
The five for an order
HelMa Cakes — Descartes 32, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. Certified by the Catalan coeliac association. Celebration cakes published at 32,00 to 77,00 euros: the lemon cake with a number or letter at 36,50, the Charlotte’s Cake from 52,90, the large format from 69,90. 48 hours’ notice, collection Monday to Friday 12pm to 5.30pm and Saturday 12pm to 2pm, phone 620 90 14 95. Vegan, dairy-free and sugar-free versions available.
It is the straightforward choice for a children’s party with one coeliac guest, the scenario covered more broadly in kids’ birthday parties.
Pastisseria Sense Gluten — Berenguer de Palou 147, Sant Andreu. Open since 3 April 2019, and everything that leaves the building is gluten-free and lactose-free, from country bread and croissants to cakes. Orders by WhatsApp with three to seven days’ notice and home delivery. Hours are 9am to 1pm and 5pm to 7pm on weekdays, mornings only at weekends.
It is the best answer for someone carrying both intolerances, with the caveat that Sant Andreu is well outside the usual visitor circuit.
Pastelosofía — Ferran Turné 16, La Sagrera. A 100 % gluten-free workshop with more than 60 items, from quiches to fondant cakes, also covering vegan, dairy-free and sugar-free. Quoted individually by design, and a worked cake needs around two weeks.
Sana Locura Gluten Free — Balmes 367, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. Breads and pastries made daily on site, with dairy-free options including lemon pie and an Oreo cake, plus vegan burger and hot dog buns. Delivers within Barcelona through Glovo. It sits on the same street as Jansana, 261 street numbers and about 25 minutes’ walk apart.
Ca la María — gluten-free and lactose-free workshop. Doughnuts, biscuits, cakes and croissants, plus pizzas and empanadas. The warning that saves the trip: the workshop is in Badalona, not in Barcelona. From the centre it is roughly 25 minutes on a Rodalies train.

Getting it to where you are staying
A hotel or a rented flat is not the same delivery problem as a home address, and the five routes are not equivalent.
| Bakery | How it reaches you |
|---|---|
| Casa Lupita | Ships to Spain, France and Italy, so it can arrive before you do |
| HelMa Cakes | Delivers across the metropolitan area |
| Pastisseria Sense Gluten | Its own delivery, arranged over WhatsApp |
| Sana Locura | Within Barcelona through Glovo |
| Pastelosofía | Collection at the workshop, or delivery in Barcelona |
Glovo is the only same-day route, and it is a courier rather than the bakery, so the box question in the checklist below applies with more force. For anything ordered days ahead, confirm the building has somewhere to leave it: a bakery van will not wait.
What to confirm before paying a deposit
Whether wheat flour comes into the building at all. This is the only question that truly decides, and it is worth asking plainly rather than asking whether they “do gluten-free”.
Whether it also contains dairy, egg or nuts. Gluten-free is not free of everything else, and a great many suitable recipes lean on ground almond. Five of the seven here declare a dairy-free option, but almond is a separate conversation.
Whether the decoration is made in-house. A bought-in figure, topper or decorated biscuit can carry wheat even when the cake underneath does not, and it is the part a bakery is least likely to volunteer.
How it will be boxed and carried. A box that has previously held gluten breaks the chain at the very last step, after everything else has been done correctly. It is the one people forget, and a serious bakery answers without pausing.
Around the order
For a wedding rather than a birthday, the gluten-free arrangements at that scale are covered in wedding cakes. Sit-down meals without gluten are a separate problem, partly covered in vegan restaurants, and the dairy-free frozen options in vegan ice cream. The city’s older sweet institutions, most of them emphatically not gluten-free, are in historic pastry shops.
Frequently asked questions about gluten-free cakes in Barcelona
What does the Catalan coeliac certification actually mean?
The Associació Celíacs de Catalunya audits the process, not just the recipe, which is the difference that matters for a diagnosed coeliac. Two of the seven bakeries here carry it: HelMa Cakes and Casa Lupita.
Can I order a gluten-free cake from outside Spain before I arrive?
Casa Lupita is the only one on this list with an online shop that ships to Spain, France and Italy, so an order can be placed before you land. Everything else needs a local address or a collection in person.
How far ahead do I need to order?
48 hours at HelMa Cakes, three to seven days at Pastisseria Sense Gluten, and around two weeks at Pastelosofía if the cake needs fondant or a modelled figure. Nothing custom is a same-day proposition.
Where can I buy something gluten-free the same day?
Jansana Gluten Free on Balmes 106 has the longest hours of the seven, 8.30am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 2pm on Sunday, with individual pieces at two to three euros. It is the practical answer for a visitor.
Does gluten-free also mean dairy-free here?
Not automatically, and many gluten-free recipes lean on ground almond. Five of the seven declare a dairy-free option, and Pastisseria Sense Gluten makes its entire range without lactose as well.
Can they deliver to my hotel or rented flat?
HelMa Cakes covers the metropolitan area, Pastisseria Sense Gluten runs its own delivery arranged over WhatsApp, and Sana Locura sends within Barcelona through Glovo, which is the only same-day route. Confirm the building can take a delivery, because a bakery van will not wait.
Is Ca la María in Barcelona?
No. Its workshop is in Badalona, about 25 minutes from the centre on a Rodalies train. It belongs to the metropolitan coeliac circuit rather than the city itself, which is worth knowing before setting out.
Prices, hours and certification status taken from each bakery’s own site and shop information, consulted on 1 September 2026. The 20 mg/kg figure is the European threshold for a gluten-free claim.
